Unhesitatingly

Half Mag / Half Zine

A young mum who thought she couldn’t have children again has miraculously given birth to two babies conceived nine days apart.

Jordan Parks, 27, from Doncaster, had her two newly born kids registered as unidentified twins due to them being conceived at different times.

This is so rare it’s something said to happen only once in 600 million times.

Jordan said she and her partner had given up on having more kids as her polycystic ovary syndrome meant she needed fertility treatment for her first one Freddy, who is now three.

Having been unwell during the hormone treatment she decided she didn’t want to have to go through it again.

So when Jordan found out she was pregnant with two babies during a 10-week scan, she thought it could only be a “miracle”.

Jordan is said to be one of the 14 or so cases in the world of superfetation twin pregnancy, which saw her fall pregnant with her son, Arthur, now 1, and then fall pregnant again nine days later with her daughter, Aubrey, now 1.

“I have heard that superfetation could happen with animals, but I never in a million years thought that it would happen to me,” Jordan said.

“It is so insane to even think about it. I just couldn’t believe it.

“When I tell people about my pregnancy sometimes they don’t even believe that is it a real thing. They are so shocked.”

After having their first child, Jordan and her partner, Jason, 28, were desperate for another baby but decided against it and that they would enjoy life with their baby boy.

In February 2019, Jordan came down with what she thought was a vomiting bug.

She said: “I felt like death. Jason had said to me that I had only ever previously been this ill when I was pregnant.

“I never expected to be pregnant, but I bought a test to double-check and it came back positive.

“I was absolutely gobsmacked. After being told I was infertile, I could not believe my body had done this.

“It was a miracle.”

After a fall a few weeks later, Jordan booked a private scan to check that her baby was okay.

She had experienced some spotting and says that she didn’t feel pregnant.

Jordan, a plasterer, said: “I was so anxious I just needed to make sure that everything was okay and the hospital wasn’t able to do a reassurance scan.

“So, we booked a private scan. Jason and Freddy came in with me to hold my hand.

“The sonographer started the scan and asked me if I was ready.

“She then went on to say ‘there’s one’ and I had no idea what she meant. I thought she meant one ovary.

“But she meant one baby. And that’s when we were told we were having twins.

“I was looking at them and one was so much bigger while the other just looked like a little tiny marble.

“I started to panic. I thought the smaller one had maybe passed away and that’s why it wasn’t as developed.

“I was frantically asked why it was like that.”

The sonographer continued to explain to Jordan that one baby was ten weeks and two days, while the other was just nine weeks.

Jordan was told that she had conceived twice and fallen pregnant again nine days after originally conceiving.

The mum-of-three said: “I was in utter shock. It was so much to take in and I didn’t know what to do.

“Firstly, I couldn’t believe I was going to have two babies, and then secondly this incredibly rare thing had happened to me where I had gotten pregnant twice, after believing I’d never be pregnant again. It was crazy.”

At a 22 week scan, Jordan was informed that Arthur, who she had conceived first, was thriving and the smaller baby was not and her brain was full of cysts.

Jordan says that they were told to not expect her to survive the remainder of the pregnancy.

She added: “For the whole of my pregnancy you could see how much smaller she was.

“We were told she was more than likely not going to make it. The doctor told us that she has never seen a baby in this condition make it through.

“I was even advised to terminate Aubrey to help Arthur and give him a better chance.

“Jason and I sat down and had a big discussion about what we wanted to do and we decided we didn’t want to terminate and we would just let the pregnancy take its course.

“Two weeks later we went back for another scan to see how things were.

“It felt so sombre and as though they were preparing to tell us that she had passed away.

“However, it was another miracle. We were told that all bar one of the cysts had disappeared and that the baby would survive, although she would probably need to spend a while in NICU.

“I couldn’t believe that around two weeks ago we had been advised and were talking about terminating her, and now she had made this miraculous recovery.

“I was so grateful we chose to carry on with the pregnancy. From this point everything else in the pregnancy went fairly smoothly, it was quite a breeze actually.

“At 36 weeks, my waters broke and I underwent an emergency C-section and had my babies.

“There was exactly 1 lbs difference between them. Aubrey was born first at 4 lbs 12 oz and Arthur was 5 lbs 12 oz.

“I was warned that Aubrey may have to be taken to NICU, but to everyone’s amazement once again, she didn’t need to.

“Arthur was actually the one who needed to go to NICU where he spent three days due to having a sticky lung.

“It was so scary as I had been told the whole time that he was the healthy baby.”

Aubrey has a heart murmur, but the family have been told it is nothing to worry about and since their birth, both babies have been healthy, happy and continuing to thrive.

Jordan said: “I can’t believe I was blessed to have these miracles through a rare phenomenon. It’s incredible.

“It was just insane seeing the size difference between them while they were developing.

“The twins are amazing with each other and Freddy is absolutely loving having a little brother and sister.

“They’re little balls of fun.”
